{"id":699,"date":"2022-02-24T16:10:31","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T16:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.osgodbyvillage.uk\/heritage\/?page_id=699"},"modified":"2022-09-20T15:37:03","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T14:37:03","slug":"small-holdings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/test.osgodbyvillage.uk\/heritage\/small-holdings\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Holdings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Apples, Pears and Fruit Bushes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, Selby Garden Centre is a destination for the community to buy a wide range of gardening needs, as well as indulge in a cuppa and food.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 1921, it was a destination for people to visit and learn about fruit culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The land was part of the former Osgodby Estate, and on 2 June 1920 was purchased by East Riding County Council as part of an Estate of 367 acres at a cost of \u00a314,815, or \u00a340 6s 2d per acre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four-acre plot, together with house and buildings, was let to the Yorkshire Council for Agricultural Education as a \u201cDemonstrational Fruit Centre\u201d in connection with the University of Leeds.&nbsp; The land was planted in April 1921 with fruit bushes, and apple and pear trees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 1928, the plot was occupying 9 acres and fully equipped with the metrological station to monitor the influence of weather on certain crops.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the first Managers was Mr Percy Cragg, and from 1931 Mr F Potts.&nbsp; Mr Potts had previously been Assistant Manager.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With funding cuts, the University of Leeds transferred operations to Askham Bryan.
