Full of anticipation and excitement, the Osgodby Dig began on 5 April, with professional direction by Jon Kenny, Community Archaeologist. It was great to meet all the volunteers on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first job of the day was to put-up the tent so we could store equipment, shelter from April showers, do the washing of finds, and most importantly somewhere to sit to enjoy tea and Jan’s delicious homemade triple choc chip cookies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have ever put up a tent, you do not need too much imagination of the “fun” we had. Sorting out the poles was the first challenge. Time to put-on the top of the tent…. or maybe not. We battled with our brains, but the westerly wind was proving the biggest problem of the day. Six people hanging on to the legs, while others attempted to move the tent top into position – what a sight to behold! After much discussion, it was decided to lower the tent to the ground or it was in serious danger of flying over the roof tops of Osgodby. As one of the volunteers uttered… “Health & Safety!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having abandoned putting up the tent, attention turned to Trench 1. Geophysics printouts shared and studied with the volunteers, the location was agreed and marked out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jan had the honour of cutting the first sod. True to form and keeping up her nickname of “Finds Magnet” Jan put the spade in and declared she had the first find – a crumpled can of Fosters Lager! Cheers Jan, although quick to add Jan is not a lager drinker – real ale rules. Everyone worked hard and by the end of the session the turf had been removed and Trench 1 was officially open!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2 – we welcomed new volunteers to the sites, and it was time to return to the battle of the tent! Although the wind had dropped, it was decided to move it to a more sheltered spot. All hands on deck and it was soon up. One of the neighbours asked if there was going to be a wedding reception in the marquee! The tongue in cheek reply was, “no it’s a festival tent” quickly adding – joke! To matters in Trench 1. It was down to lots of digging and trowelling, and after deliberation, more digging, then more trowelling. Our lovely volunteers worked hard. Lots of finds along the way ready for “wash day” Jan’s extremely moreish triple choc chip cookies were 1back on the menu today and enjoyed by all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3 – Quiet day today, Linda was busy in the tent washing the finds. No work was carried out on the trench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

End of week 1, and it was great that work had started, having been delayed from last year. Looking forward to week 2. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
