Jan, Mark, June, Dave, Karen, and Shirley visited the East Yorkshire Archives in Beverley. A big list of archives had been pre-ordered and awaited us on our arrival. A £10 fee for a photograph permit for the day was well spent. A break for lunch, saw us wandering around the building trying to find the café – up to the top (the view over Beverley Minster was beautiful), and then back down two floors – we eventually found the café. Shirley got a little excited and was told to “shush” by the staff. We came away with lots of photos of documents for future reference and use.
We had looked at Electoral Rolls, papers relating to the manor (thank goodness Jan had undertaken a Latin course!), papers relating to the building of the railways; papers relating to the windmill, Osgodby Pains, and much more.
We asked to look at the Register of Deeds, and it was politely explained that we had to limit the Registers we wanted to look at – when they arrived – large bulky books – we understood! Unfortunately we were unable to look at the Deeds Books for the references we found – sounds like another day trip!
